The overall system of nptel is really good. You get assignments from time to time and also the questions are standard. These courses are free. You can learn from videos and solve assignments for free. If you want to take the certification exam then you have to pay ₹1100/-. If you complete the course successfully, you will get a certificate with IIT or IISc tag that you can mention in your C.V.The standard of the final exam is also good as it belongs to IITs and IISc.Anyone from anywhere can do these courses. They provide detailed solutions of assignments.

Today I took the certification exam for the course “The joy of computing using Python”, after completing the course. The course is designed remarkably. Everything covered is very useful and can be applied in real life scenarios. Though the application of python is covered on very high level, it still gives you enough kick to start with. The course is divided into different sections with name as “Cool Ideas i (where i in range (1,10). Ideas are really cool. I work at IBM specialised in ETL and Automation Testing. The course has designed weekly programming assignment which helps you apply your learning directly. And at the end you get to take the certification exam

Basically I don't see much of a difference between regular classes and online learning. I look at online learning as new way of the 21st century NPTEL courses are enhancing learning thru technology. The Discussion forum has been a great help as most questions that I had already been discussed there.
